Professorenwijk, Burgemeesterswijk en Rijndijkbuurt

Living in a prime location on the edge of the city centre

The Professorenwijk, Burgemeesterswijk and Rijndijkbuurt rank among the top 10 most popular neighbourhoods to live in the Netherlands. And rightly so. These neighbourhoods are home mainly to stylish 1930s houses where you will soon feel at home, and where growing children have a wonderful time.

Sport and schools

The neighbourhood lies to the south of Leiden city centre and has many 1930s houses, along with some dating from around 1910. You are in the lively centre of Leiden in 5 minutes by bike or 10 minutes on foot. Close by are highly regarded schools such as the Lorentzschool, St. Josephschool, the Stedelijk Gymnasium and the Bonaventura College. Hockeyclub Roomburg, Tennisclub Roomburg and korfball club Sporting Trigon guarantee plenty of sporting and social contact in the neighbourhood. The neighbourhood also has a number of traditional local shops, including a quality butcher, a baker, a chemist, a cheese shop and a greengrocer. Everything you need within easy reach. And the motorways are easily reached via the Lammenschansweg and the Hoge Rijndijk.

Green and active

Child-friendly, green, quiet, cycling, sociable and community-minded are the key words that describe this lovely part of Leiden. Lazing about or playing in the Roomburgerpark, picnicking or walking the dog in Polderpark Cronesteyn on the other side of the Rijn-Schiekanaal, or taking the boat to do your shopping at the Saturday market in town. You can do it all from your own ‘back garden’. The active residents' association not only looks after the interests of local residents, but also organises a big party every year on King's Day and a festive Christmas get-together in December.

Future developments

The municipality has looked into the possibility of a neighbourhood sports park in Professorenwijk-Oost. The idea is to create a modern, open sports park: a place suited to sport and exercise, but also to activities run by schools and childcare centres, for example. The options for expanding Hockeyclub Roomburg are also being considered. In addition, the municipality has plans to place temporary housing units on the green by the Verdamstraat. It is not yet certain whether these will go ahead.

Property values

The neighbourhood is a protected townscape, made up largely of 1930s houses as well as homes from around 1910/1920, including several listed buildings. The area has always been highly sought after, which is why house prices remained stable during the crisis. Prices are now rising again by around 8-10% a year. Demand exceeds supply, so most houses are currently selling above the asking price. In the 1930s, great care was taken to use high-quality materials. There was a keen eye for detail, which you can still see in the houses today in the fine woodcarving, stained-glass windows, en-suite doors and solid construction. Some 90 years later, you still reap the benefits! Through the neighbourhood app Nextdoor, which is widely used, many owners are reunited with their lost cats, people ‘cook for the neighbourhood’, warnings go out about anything suspicious and plenty of items change hands.
